Allegheny County Storm Update as of 6:00 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 7

PITTSBURGH — Power companies are working to reconnect service throughout Allegheny County. There are currently 24,000 customers without electrical service, which is down from a high of 80,000 yesterday. Driving conditions continue to be challenging in some areas. Power lines and trees are continuing to fall due to the heavy snow.

Allegheny County Emergency Services continues to ask motorists to limit driving and stay off of streets and roadways to allow public works crews, power companies and emergency responders to conduct their work.

In an effort to reduce volume on roadways and allow public works crews and power companies to conduct their operations, only the following essential Allegheny County government offices will be open on Mon., Feb. 8:

  • County Executive’s Office
  • County Manager’s Office
  • County Police
  • County Jail
  • Shuman Juvenile Detention Center
  • Medical Examiner – autopsies, forensic investigators, crime scene investigators
  • Human Services – emergency operations center activation employees and skeleton crew to be notified by management
  • Health Department – emergency operations center activation employees and skeleton crew to be notified by management
  • Kane Regional Centers
  • Emergency Services – 9-1-1, Emergency Management, Fire Marshal
  • Public Works – road crews and facilities as directed by management

All other executive branch departments and offices will be closed on Monday, including the Allegheny County Fire Academy.

For information regarding the Court of Common Pleas, County Council, County Treasurer, County Controller, District Attorney and Sheriff, please contact those offices directly.

Community College of Allegheny County

All CCAC campuses, centers and offices will be closed on Mon., Feb. 8.

Allegheny County Jail & Shuman Center

The Allegheny County Jail has canceled all visitations until further notice. The Shuman Juvenile Detention Center has canceled all visitations and clothing drop-offs until further notice.

Allegheny County Public Works

The vast majority of county-owned roads are clear of snow and ice. Trees are continuing to fall in some areas, which may result in temporary road closures. Motorists should stay home, but use caution if venturing out.

The following county-owned roads are currently closed due to downed power lines:

  • Lougeay Road in Wilkins Twp.
  • Cliff Mine Road in North Fayette Twp.
  • Pangburn Hollow Road in Elizabeth
  • Glen Avenue in Shaler Twp.
  • Scotia Hollow Road in Jefferson Hills.

Allegheny County Parks

The Boyce Park ski and snowtubing area and ice skating rinks in North Park and South Park are closed until further notice.

Port Authority of Allegheny County

Port Authority has restored limited bus service on multiple routes across Allegheny County. The T remains shut down. Service has been restored to the Mon Incline. Some bus routes have not yet been restored as road conditions remain difficult in many areas. Riders should check Port Authority’s website at www.portauthority.org for updated information.

Allegheny County  Airport Authority

Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport are open and operating. Travelers should check with their airlines for possible delays before going to the airport.

Allegheny County Emergency Services & 9-1-1

Call volumes to Allegheny County 9-1-1 remain high. Residents should only call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.

Residents should report power outages directly to their power companies. Non-emergency calls and questions, such as requests for snow removal and plowing, should be directed to the municipalities. Please do not call 9-1-1 for non-emergency issues.

Allegheny County Warming Centers & Shelters

Warming centers will continue to operate this evening. Warming centers are places where people can go, get warm and have a hot beverage and snack. List of Allegheny County Warming Centers.

The Red Cross is operating three shelters, where people can spend the night and get heartier meals. The shelters are:

  • White Oak – Rainbow Fire Department, 2916 Jacks Run Road
  • Elizabeth Twp. – Elizabeth Forward High School, 1000 Weigles Hill Road
  • Bethel Park – Hamilton Presbyterian Church, 4500 Hamilton Road

The Red Cross is working to open three additional shelters and will provide information on the locations once they are determined.
