Board Members Elect New Leadership at Board Organization Meeting
Sherry Hazuda Elected President
PITTSBURGH, December 6, 2010 – The Pittsburgh School Board is under new leadership as the Board elected officers for the 2011 fiscal year. Sherry Hazuda was elected President. Ms. Sharene Shealey was elected First-Vice President and Mr. Thomas Sumpter was elected Second-Vice President. The Board
also elected Superintendent Mark Roosevelt as Secretary of the Board, along with four Assistant Secretaries, a School Treasurer and Deputy School Treasurer.

The Public School Code of 1949 requires that the directors of all school districts hold an organization meeting to elect various officers for the forthcoming fiscal year. A majority vote of all the Directors is required for election to any office.
Board President Sherry Hazuda
Sherry Hazuda was first elected to represent District 6 in 2007. Ms. Hazuda currently serves as the chair of Board Effectiveness and Communications & Marketing committees. She additionally represents the Board as the Title I liaison. She is the mother of four and grandmother of two children. She is a resident of Beechview employed by a health care organization.
First-Vice President Sharene Shealey
Sharene Shealey was first elected to represent District 1 in 2009. Ms. Shealey is chair of the Negotiations Committee, a member of the Education Committee and represents the Board as liaison to the Right to Education Task Force. Ms. Shealey is a resident of North Point Breeze and is employed as a Chemical Engineer. She is the mother of four children.
Second-Vice President Thomas Sumpter
Thomas Sumpter was first elected to represent District 3 in 2005 and has served as First Vice-President since 2009. Prior to serving as First Vice-President, Mr. Sumpter was elected Second Vice-President in 2008. Mr. Sumpter has chaired the Board’s Education Committee. He has also served on the Negotiations, Government and Ad Hoc committees and has represented the Board at the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and Head Start Policy Council. He is married and the father of one child.
