Hillman Performing Arts Series Kicks Off With Shana Tucker Sept. 15

 

 

 The Hillman Performing Arts Series at Shady Side Academy kicks off the 2018-2019 season with singer-songwriter/cellist Shana Tucker onSaturday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. The coffeehouse-style show takes place in the Peter J. Kountz Theater of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, located on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel. Complimentary pre-show beverages and snacks will be available in the lobby starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are only $20 and can be purchased online at www.thehillman.org or by phone at 412-968-3040.

 

With a deep respect for lyrical storytelling, Shana Tucker (pictured) delivers a unique voice through her self-described genre of ChamberSoul™. Her melodies weave strong hints of jazz, classical, soulful folk, acoustic pop and a touch of R&B into a distinctive rhythmic tapestry. Tucker’s style and sound as been described as a blend of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, with a complexity reminiscent of Bill Withers. She has opened for internationally acclaimed artists including Norah Jones, Lisa Fischer, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Hamiet Bluett, Javon Jackson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and Indigo Girls. The 2018-2019 Hillman Series features seven shows from September through April, including a four-show Main Stage Series in the 662-seat Richard E. Rauh Theater and a three-show Black Box Series in the intimate Peter J. Kountz Theater. Show tickets cost $20-$30 and a variety of subscription packages are available for $50-$145. Artrageous

Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 • 7:30 p.m. • Main Stage Series
Imagine an artist creating a masterpiece before your eyes in mere moments. With a palette that mixes captivating vocals, intricate choreography and exciting audience interaction, Artrageous takes you on a unique visual journey packed with inspiration, creativity and fun. The troupe pays tribute to a variety of art forms, culminating in a gallery of finished paintings. It’s a one-of-a-kind crossover experience!

 

Lynn Trefzger

Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 • 7:30 p.m. • Main Stage Series

Have you ever had a childhood hobby that got out of hand? For more than 30 years, ventriloquist and comedienne Lynn Trefzger has given life to a trunk full of comical characters. Audiences are treated to her vocal illusion talents when they meet a drunken and lovable camel, a grumpy old man and a feisty little girl – and maybe even some audience members who are brought up on stage for the action!

 

Deanna Witkowski

Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 • 7:30 p.m. • Black Box Series

In her Pittsburgh debut, pianist Deanna Witkowski will perform songs from her album Raindrop: Improvisations on Chopin, a solo piano session that seamlessly combines jazz, Chopin and the music of Brazil. Connecting jazz with other deep musical currents is what makes her such a visionary artist.

 

Poor Man’s Gambit

Saturday, March 9, 2019 • 7:30 p.m. • Black Box Series

An energetic trio of traditional Irish musicians blending Celtic and American music, Poor Man's Gambit is comprised of Corey Purcell (button accordion, cittern, vocals, bodhran, dance), Dylan Richardson (guitar, tenor banjo, bouzouki, vocals), and Genevieve Gillespie (fiddle, vocals, dance).

 

The Amazing Max!

Saturday, March 16, 2019 • 7:30 p.m. • Main Stage Series

An interactive magic show with a mind of its own! The enchanted look that spreads across the faces of Max Darwin’s young fans as he works miracles is astounding. Operating on the principle that "every show is unique because every child brought to the stage is unique," Max conjures a custom experience that kids will carry with them long after the show ends. Pre-show magic lab included in ticket price.

 

The Flying Karamazov Brothers

Saturday, April 13, 2019 • 7:30 p.m. • Main Stage Series

A zany showcase filled with laugh-out-loud comedy, wild theatrics, arcane errata and astonishing juggling feats. If you see one group of multi-faceted new vaudevillians at the apex of their ambidextrous and alliterative ability, see The Flying Karamazov Brothers. They are not your father’s wild-haired, juggling, flame-throwing, kilt-and-tutu-wearing performers. We’ll be laughing out loud with you!
