MAYOR PRESIDES OVER FIRST CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY GRADUATION CEREMONY

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today led the graduation ceremony for the City’s first Civic Leadership Academy, a free 10-week course designed to educate residents about how their City’s government operates. Course participants had the opportunity to tell the Mayor what they learned, as well as their plans to continue to be even more engaged and involved citizens. The Mayor concluded the event with the presentation of graduation certificates to the participating residents.

“I hope that this class has inspired all participants to become more informed and effective community leaders,” said Mayor Ravenstahl. “I strongly believe that the continued success of our City requires engaged citizens to work hand-in-hand with local government in addressing the needs of our neighborhoods.”

Selected out of approximately 100 applicants, the 19 participants attended weekly sessions focusing on different City departments and the services they provide to make for a safer, more livable City. Sessions were developed by City directors to include tours, hands-on demonstrations, and fun activities to provide an up-close and personal view of how their department helps to operate the City.

“It was a privilege to be part of this diverse class, and to meet with highest City officials to learn about how City government handles routine matters as well as the tough ones,” said course graduate, Dr. Ellen Roth. “We thank Mayor Ravenstahl for initiating this extraordinary opportunity to become immersed in a transparent view of City government, as well as the dedicated department leaders who participated.”

The next Civic Leadership Academy class for adult City residents will begin in March. Applications for this Academy course will be available in January.  A summer course for high school-aged youths is tentatively scheduled for June, with applications available in April.
