Pittsburgh’s Popular LGBT Film Festival Returns
New Name & New Movies Starring Old Favorites
Lovers of great indie movies are rejoicing at the return of Pittsburgh’s only LGBT film festival, coming to the Harris Theater October 12-21, 2012.
Begun in 1985, what is now Reel Q is the sixth oldest film festival in the world dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) cinema.
There are plenty of stars being featured in these films, including Olympia Dukakis, Brenda Fricker, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Alicia Witt, Robert Gant, Meredith Baxter and Jennifer Elise Cox. But what may be the most exciting star turn involves an Hollywood icon who died more than fifty years ago after making just three movies.
That star is the late, great bisexual actor James Dean (1931-1955). The film “Joshua Tree, 1951” features model and actor James Preston (who bears an uncanny resemblance to Dean) as Jimmy shortly before he became famous. A complex triangle develops between Jim, his best friend/roommate and a would-be starlet on the road together. This is the engaging story of a striking young man tries to discover his place in the world.
“Joshua Tree” screens at the Harris Theater, Friday, October 19 at 9:30 p.m.

“Stud Life” Features Impressive Young Cast
Race, young love, identity and friendship are explored in the engaging British film “Stud Life,” being screened as part of Reel Q (formerly the Pittsburgh International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival).
Actress T’Nia Miller, who has been making a name for herself on the British stage and television, stars as a black lesbian with butch tendencies named JJ. She shares her life with a cute, white gay boy named Seb (Kyle Treslove). They live in the same apartment and support themselves by photographing weddings.
But their fun and idyllic life is thrown into jeopardy by the arrival the sexy Elle (Jamaican actress Robyn Kerr) who begins a tumultuous relationship with JJ.
“Stud Life” screens at the Harris Theater on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. It is presented in cooperation with the Kelly-Strayhorn Performing Arts Center.
