Read The Sandusky Grand Jury Report, Then Hug Your Kids

It took me all of about two minutes to locate an online link to the 23-page grand jury report that implicates former Penn State Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky and his sustained sexual abuse of young males. After only reading two pages I was repulsed but continued on for several more pages before deciding to finally shut it down.

I have been closely following this particularly horrifying story, with each day revealing new details that make the overall situation progressively more harrowing and sickening. Former Head Coach Joe Paterno, in addition to other PSU administrators, coaches, even possibly local (Centre County, PA) authorities, continually enabled Sandusky to systematically violate young men, thereby ripping away their innocence and emotionally scarring them for life.

These were people in various positions of influence who pathetically chose to routinely suppress such vile details apparently in order to preserve the idealistic facade that Penn State and its revered football program had upheld for so many years. Many of these same people are parents, grandparents, and in Paterno's case I believe, a great-grandparent.

Selfish Acts Perpetuated The Abuse

Regrettably, the physical and emotional welfare of countless children were subordinated as a result of their abhorrent and self-serving behavior. Though the most notorious of the allegations contained in the grand jury report involves an incident that took place in 2002 (in the shower stall inside the University's football complex locker room, and which involved Sandusky and a boy reported to be approximately 10 years of age) there is in fact documented evidence that strongly indicates Sandusky was committing similarly appalling acts as far back as 1994. As of this writing, there are at least nine purported victims of Sandusky's who have thus far stepped forward and provided to law enforcement information that has roundly incriminated him.

At the suggestion of a national sports radio host who actually broke down this morning toward the end of a particular show segment, I am imploring all of you who have children to take some time to read over the grand jury report. It is not delicate reading by any means but it will undoubtedly shed some light on the behavioral patterns of a serial child predator. Tragically, it is all too easy and commonplace for a young child to fall into the preying clutches of a monster like Sandusky.

Our Children Should Always Come First

Our education system is a comprehensive mess, with plenty of blame to be generously spread around. There are so many systemic problems adversely affecting our schools (our whole country for that matter) that at times everything seems so overwhelming. Quite frankly, I occasionally believe it is a hopeless cause.

Nevertheless, with all of the heated back and forth between combatants regarding the education reform movement, it is easy to forget why we are so immersed in the debate in the first place. This is all about what is best for our children and not about trying to protect a glossy personal or institutional image, or expand our political turf.

I strongly encourage all parents and guardians to tell your children, as soon as humanly possible, that it may not always be okay but that you will always be there for them and have their best interests at heart. Remember, it's not nearly so much about what is best for us but what really is best for our kids.
