PUM FOCUS: The Pittsburgh Project

WHO

The Pittsburgh Project is a nonprofit community development organization with a 25-year track record of developing leaders and serving the city’s most vulnerable residents.  Our year-round staff of 57 operates a progressive series of afterschool and summer programs for 450 urban young people, deploys over 2800 people annually to perform free home repairs for Pittsburgh’s in-need elderly homeowners, and spearheads economic development and job training efforts in our Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

VISION

That Pittsburgh will be called a City of Truth, where once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets each with cane in hand because of age, and where the city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there (adapted from Zechariah 8:4-5).

PURPOSE : We develop servant leaders and uphold the dignity of vulnerable homeowners

Community Outreach

As part of an effort to develop leaders and uphold the dignity of vulnerable homeowners, we run several initiatives to make our neighborhood stronger, safer, and more peaceful.  Our team facilitates conversations about community needs and opportunities, and responds with custom strategies that address the felt needs of neighbors.

Current efforts include revitalizing and reopening Fowler Park and Pool, a long-neglected public space with great potential for emerging as the centerpiece gathering space for neighbors of all ages, running a YouthBuild site in which neighbors gain job skills and academic help, and launching an Urban Farming Initiative in which staff, neighbors, and students are reclaiming vacant land for garden space, seeing young people be trained in ecology, nutrition, and environmental stewardship, and establishing a Farmer's Market, the first of its kind in our part of the city.

Volunteer Opportunities

Want to make a real difference in the life of someone who needs a hand?  Seeking to grow and be challenged in new ways?  Consider joining one of our volunteer teams.  We deploy over 800 people throughout the year to provide critical service among our city's most vulnerable residents.  We have all sorts of opportunities to help, during different times of the year and with varying time commitments.  Want to invest in kids?  Become a Volunteer Tutor during the school year, or a Day Camp Volunteer during the summer.  Have a heart for our city's seniors?  Serve on our team of Volunteer Craftsmen or Homeowner Care Volunteers.  Like getting dirty?  Consider our Community Gardening Volunteer opportunities, or get your group signed up for a Saturday Workday.

No matter which opportunity you take, we’ll make sure you’re well-equipped to handle whatever task you tackle.  Before you start, we'll orient and train you and make sure you’re comfortable with your role.  Come join us for great fun, new friends, and the knowledge that you’ve given back to the community.

As part of our Urban Farming Initiative, we operate the Charles Street Farmers Market, a great place to buy locally grown fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.  Much of the produce is grown in our gardens by staff and students, and other items are supplied by farmers around the region through a partnership with the

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.  What a great way to make our neighborhood a more delicious place!

SCHEDULE:  Every Thursday, from June 11 to November 12, 2009.

HOURS:  We're open from 2:00 to 6:00 pm.

LOCATION: Right across from our main building, near Fowler Park and Pool.  Directions and Map are available.
