 M. Gayle Moss-President, NAACP-Pittsburgh

  Gayle Moss is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she is serving her second term as the President of the Pittsburgh branch of the NAACP. Moss retired from the University of Pittsburgh in 2001 after working for 33 1/2 years.    Her first three years she served as the Credit Manager for out-patients at Western Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic. Gayle spent twenty-five years managing the Office of Urban and Community Services (OUCS) Department of Public Affairs; the last five years she worked as a Program Developer in the Office of Student Activities, Student Affairs.

 
She is served eight (8) years as the program director of Naomi’s Place Transitional Housing, Inc. for the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church. Naomi’s Place provides temporary housing for single women (and their children) who are in transition, and who have a dual diagnosis of drug addiction/alcohol addiction and mental health problems.
 
For the last twenty-four years her church membership has been with the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church. Gayle has been the recipient of many prestigious awards through the years. The most recent:
 
·         January, 2009 – she began her third term as President of the NAACP Pittsburgh Branch
·         September, 2008 – she was selected as one of the 50 Women of Excellence by the New Pittsburgh Courier
·         May 16, 2008 – she was selected as a Phenomenal Woman by the Bidwell United Presbyterian Church
·         October, 2009 – She was elected for her 2nd term to the PA State Conference of NAACP Branches
·         January 2006 – She began her second term as President, NAACP Pittsburgh
·         November 18, 2004 - The big    accomplishment that has impacted her life is being elected the first woman President for the NAACP Pittsburgh Branch. The Pittsburgh Branch has been in existence since 1915. The most prestigious civil rights organization in the country. 
 
 
Winning on the platform “New Vision, New Direction & New Leadership.” Since her election she has doubled the membership. As of January, 2002 she was elected First Vice President for the third term. 
 
She has worked long and hard in supporting and advancing the principles of the NAACP by serving and implementing many projects. One of these is the NAACP Pittsburgh Branch Annual NAACP/Pepsi Tennis Tournament which is now in its 31st year. The scholarship fund which was created from the funds generated by this event has received more than $500,000.00 over the last twenty plus years. She has served as the chair of the Personnel Committee since her tenure of First Vice President. She has served on the Annual Human Rights Dinner Committee in a policy making status. In October, 1991 she was elected to the Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches for a two-year term where she served on the Finance Committee of the Executive Committee. In October, 2001 she was elected again to the Executive Committee.  
 
Gayle is a life member of the NAACP. 
 
Gayle Is the mother of two sons, the oldest Donald is now deceased, and Lawrence. The grandmother of five and the great-grandmother of twelve.
