Who We Are

Pittsburgh Urban Media

Black Culture & News in Pittsburgh

PittsburghUrbanMedia.com (PUM) is a Black woman–owned, locally rooted digital publication dedicated to elevating, informing, and empowering African American communities in Pittsburgh and across Pennsylvania.

Launched in August 2009, PUM began as an online magazine created to connect readers to the rich diversity, culture, and lived experiences of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Over the years, it has evolved into a trusted media platform serving a broad urban audience seeking representation, truth, and meaningful dialogue.

Our mission is grounded in economic, political, and social empowerment. We report on the issues that shape our lives — education, health, equity, culture, business, and public policy — with a commitment to accountability, solutions, and community impact. Our storytelling is intentional, informed, and rooted in lived experience.

PittsburghUrbanMedia.com is especially dedicated to strengthening families and addressing long-standing health disparities affecting Black communities. Through accessible resources, informed reporting, and uplifting narratives, we aim to empower readers with knowledge that supports healthier, more resilient lives.

When African Americans tell our own stories — authentically and unapologetically — we shape our future.
